and lands of l'Empordà |
This week itinerary goes through
the interior and along the coast
of l’Empordà, emphasizing
the best of the coast, with
a two day lodging right by the
sea. This permits a combination
of bike- and beach holiday at
high quality beaches. The route
starts and ends in a fantastic
hotel, specialized for cyclists
and situated next to the historic
nucleus of Torroella de Montgrí.
The route combines a rocky coastline,
a soft countryside and a rural
atmosphere.
You follow the coast to the
North to find the important
Greek-Roman ruins of Empúries
and the natural park ‘Aiguamolls
d’Empordà’.
Towards the interior you visit
an area with rolling relief
and picturesque medieval settlements
as Monells, Cruïlles, Madremanya,
La Pera, Corçà...
that are worthwhile visiting.
You will visit the most important
spots of the area like La Bisbal
d'Empordà, the region's
capital with its beautiful castle
and also the medieval historic
monumental village of Peratallada.
You return to the coast to the
picturesque village of Calella
de Palafrugell that still retains
it original charm with its typical
houses by the sea. At the end
of the route you return to Torroella
de Montgrí through the
magnificent area known as ‘Empordanet’,
visiting the fantastic medieval
historic monumental village
of Pals.
This route stands out for the
enchanting choice of lodgings.

Day
1: Arrival to Torroella
del Montgrí
Arrival at the interesting
hotel Molí del Mig,
specialized for cyclists.
Torroella is close to Girone
(1 hour by train from Barcelone).
Orientation meeting, bike
fitting (in case of bike
hire), route documentation
it’s explication all
at the hotel. Lodging in
this lovely hotel. |

Day
2: Torroella del Montgrí.
Circular route (37 km)
This could
be a rest day by the pool,
or stroll to the beach.
But a nice loop ride is
also available to follow
the Daro River and visit
some small but very charming
medieval villages such as
Rupia, Foixa and Púbol.
In Púbol you can
visit the Gala Dalí
Castle and discover the
surrealist world of the
prominent Catalan artist
Salvador Dalí. Return
back to the same hotel,
dinner on your own. You
also visit the ruins of
the Iberian village near
Ullastret, where you can
enjoy the wonderful panoramic
view of the area over the
area. |

Day
3: Torroella de Montgrí
- Sant Pere Pescador (40
km)
You cycle down to the seaside
to enjoy the marvellous
countryside of the river
mouth of the ‘Ter’
river, known as ‘La
Gola’. Then you cycle
around the Montgrí
massif and passing the medieval
village ‘Bellcaire
d’Empordà’
you return to the seaside
at the lovely fishing village
‘l’Escala’,
famous for it’s anchovies
production. You visit the
historical medieval complex
of St. Martí d'Empúries
and the famous Ruins of
Empúries, along a
lovely path by the seaside.

4: Sant Pere Pescador -
Natural Park Wetlands -
Sant Pere Pescador. Circular
route (44 Km)
Today
you visit the Natural Park
of l'Empordà wetlands,
a protected area of great
ornithological importance.
The second part of the itinerary
goes through Castelló
d'Empúries an important
medieval settlement. Optional
visit to the area of the
wine- and olive oil making,
at the foot of the Alberes
mountains. |

Day
5: Sant Pere Pescador -
Madremaya (40 km)
This route takes you from
the Alt Empordà region
to the region of Baix Empordà.
It goes through the most
interior part of the region,
the hilly areas on the western
borders of the alluvial
plain. This is an eminently
area where we can visit
typical rural villages,
such as Sant Miquel de Fluvià,
with a Romanesque monastery
and Sant Mori and its castle. |

6: Madremanya - Calella
de Palafrugell (42/46 km)
This day, the itinerary
goes from the most part
of region as far as the
coast. This route takes
you from Monells or Madremanya
we go to the coast. It goes
through a large number of
medieval settlements: Cruilles,
Peratallada, Ullastret...
You can also visit La Bisbal
d'Empordà, the region's
capital, with its medieval
castle and its pottery museum.

Route to return to Torroella
de Montgrí along
the area ‘Empordanet’
with a great variety of
beautiful landscapes and
culture. You visit the magnificent
medieval historic monument
of Pals. This day, the route
runs through the interesting
area of the Pals rice fields. |
